What is the AMC? Australian Mathematics Competition guide

Understand what the AMC is, how secondary divisions work, and how independent practice supports school-entered preparation.

What is the AMC? The Australian Mathematics Competition, run with the Australian Maths Trust (AMT), is a school-entered contest that rewards inventive problem solving across secondary year bands. It is not a single university entrance exam.

AMC Junior, Intermediate and Senior

Junior (Years 7–8), Intermediate (Years 9–10) and Senior (Years 11–12) set different difficulty expectations. Confirm the division your school registers before you choose timed practice.

What the Australian Mathematics Competition rewards

Items blend curriculum-adjacent skills with contest modelling — number, algebra, geometry, combinatorics and logical structure. Stamina matters: secondary papers are longer than many shorter school quizzes.

Certificates, norms and preparation

Official awards use AMT norms for that year. Unofficial mock percentages are diagnostic only. Check live registration windows with your school and amt.edu.au.

Independent AMC practice

RubricMark practice is original and unofficial. Use AMT materials for authoritative format notes, then sit timed unseen papers so methods transfer on contest day.
