Practise the thinking. Keep the judgement.
Online computer courses: study computer science by doing the work
An online computer course helps when you define the problem, trace the steps and explain a changed example. A certificate is not that work.
What should an online computer course make you do?
It should make you specify a problem, represent the data, design an algorithm and check it on a new example. A video you only watch does not do that work.
Searches for online computer courses and an online computer science course often lead to catalogues of classes and certificates. A certificate records that a provider says you completed their activities. It does not show that you can change the problem and still explain the method.
Before you enrol, read what you will produce: a traced example, a short program, or a written explanation. Confirm fees, credit and any school requirement with the provider. This guide is not an enrolment offer.
How do you study computer science online?
Choose one skill for the week. Attempt it before you watch an explanation, then review the step you could not justify.
A small week is enough. First write the inputs, the outputs and the rule. Then trace two examples by hand. Change one condition. Explain the mistake in a sentence. Later, solve a fresh example with the explanation covered.
Original example: a playlist shuffle swaps each song with a later song. For songs A, B and C, one possible result is C, B, A if A swaps with C and B stays. That process does not sort the songs. Sorting requires a final order. Shuffling requires a process and does not require one final order. Say which task you were given before you look up code.
How do you choose the next topic?
Follow the gap you can name. If you cannot say whether the error was the data, the rule or the arithmetic, that is the next practice.
In the Australian Curriculum, Digital Technologies centres on computational thinking: abstraction, data, specification, algorithms and implementation. An online course that never asks you to specify the problem is teaching tool use, not that subject. The computer science education guide explains how school programs describe the work.
RubricMark does not publish a directory of online computer courses. Use maths practice when the task is numerical, and critical thinking practice when you need to test whether a conclusion follows.
When is another course the wrong next step?
Skip another introductory course when you still cannot trace last week’s example with the notes closed.
Start the next course after you can restate the last algorithm, run it on new numbers and point to the step that failed. If a provider’s page is mostly a certificate badge, look for the tasks instead.
