Thai cheat sheet
Thai script, tones and sentence construction.
Writing system
Thai vowel signs can appear before, after, above or below consonants. A written sequence is not read using English letter rules.
ก is a consonant letter.
Lexical tones
Standard Thai has five lexical tones. Tone depends on more than a tone mark alone, including consonant class and syllable type.
Study a word’s sound and tone with its spelling.
Basic clause
Thai commonly uses subject–verb–object order. Verbs do not inflect for person in the same way as English present-tense verbs.
ฉันอ่านหนังสือ — I read a book.
Time and politeness
Time expressions and aspect particles help locate events. Politeness particles depend on speaker, sentence type and context.
ครับ / ค่ะ are common polite particles.
Negation
ไม่ commonly precedes a verb or adjective in a negative statement. ไม่มี is a common construction for absence or lack of possession.
ไม่ไป — do not go; ไม่มีหนังสือ — do not have a book/there is no book.
Existence and possession
มี can express existence or possession. Context and noun phrases identify whether a clause means that something exists or that someone has it.
ฉันมีหนังสือ — I have a book.
Classifiers with numbers
A common counting pattern places the noun first, then the number and an appropriate classifier. Classifier choice depends on the noun and context.
หนังสือสองเล่ม — two books; เล่ม is a classifier used for books.
Aspect and time
Time expressions and aspect-related words help describe when and how an event unfolds. A verb does not require an English-style past ending.
กำลังอ่าน — be reading; อ่านแล้ว — have read/read already, depending on context.
Worked example: a possession statement
ฉันมีหนังสือสองเล่ม combines a pronoun, มี, the noun, a number and a classifier. The sentence means “I have two books”.
ฉัน = I; มี = have; หนังสือ = book; สอง = two; เล่ม = book classifier.
Common mistake: a tone mark alone gives the tone
A syllable’s tone depends on consonant class, syllable structure, vowel length and any tone mark. The mark is only one part of the spelling-to-tone system.
Learn the full syllable pattern rather than assigning one fixed tone to each written mark.
Check your understanding
In หนังสือสองเล่ม, what does สอง specify?
The number two. เล่ม is the classifier, and หนังสือ is the noun.
