GMAT exam format: sections, timing, and question review
A current map of Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning, and Data Insights.
The current GMAT Exam has three 45-minute sections: Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning, and Data Insights. GMAC lists 64 questions overall. Confirm the live structure on mba.com before booking because policies can change.
Section map
- Quantitative Reasoning: 21 problem-solving questions focused on arithmetic and algebra foundations.
- Verbal Reasoning: 23 Reading Comprehension and Critical Reasoning questions.
- Data Insights: 20 questions drawing on data sufficiency, tables, graphics, multi-source material, and two-part analysis.
Order, break, and review
Candidates choose among permitted section orders and may take one optional ten-minute break. The question review feature allows bookmarking and, if time remains, reviewing questions after reaching the end of a section; GMAC limits how many answers can be edited. Check the official rule before test day.
Practice implication
Train 45-minute section endurance and make review selective. First secure an answer for every reachable question, then use remaining time on the few items where a changed answer has a clear reason.
