HAST test day tips: a candidate checklist from arrival to final review

A practical HAST test-day checklist covering school instructions, pacing, uncertainty, breaks and the final writing check.

Your school’s candidate instructions override generic advice. Read them again the evening before the test, especially the arrival time, venue, identification and permitted equipment.

The evening before

  • Pack only approved materials and set out comfortable clothing.
  • Confirm transport and a backup route.
  • Stop full practice; review a short strategy card, then sleep.

At the venue

Arrive at the time stated by the school, not at the nominal test start. Listen for section-specific instructions and check that you understand how answers are recorded. Ask the supervisor about a procedural uncertainty before timing begins.

While answering

Use planned checkpoints rather than repeatedly checking the clock. If stuck, eliminate what you can, make the best supported choice and continue. Reset between components with one slow breath and a deliberate first read; frustration from the previous section should not tax the next one.

For the writing response

Follow the actual prompt, not a memorised story. Leave a final review window for missing words, sentence boundaries, paragraph breaks and whether the ending fulfils the purpose established at the start.

After the test

Do not reconstruct confidential questions or compare remembered answers online. The school decides how HAST information contributes to selection and when outcomes are communicated, so direct result questions to that school.
