What is an IB test? IB DP exams explained
What an IB test is in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IB DP): external papers, internal assessment, and how HL/SL sit beside the core.
What is an IB test?
An IB test, in everyday search language, is usually an external written paper in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IB DP — also written DP IB). Those papers matter. They are not the whole Diploma. Each subject also includes internally assessed or moderated work defined in the current subject guide. The DP core sits beside the six subject groups.
What IB DP means
IB DP is the two-year Diploma Programme. Candidates normally study six subjects across the programme model, mixing higher level (HL) and standard level (SL). Theory of Knowledge, the extended essay, and creativity, activity, service form the core. Confirm requirements with the IB school — RubricMark is independent of the International Baccalaureate Organization.
Subject groups, not one format
A history essay, a language analysis, and a mathematics paper do not share one universal format. Practical work and visual arts, where offered, follow their own guides. Read the current subject guide for components, weighting, command terms, and permitted materials.
Internal assessment and the core
Internal assessment (IA) is school-marked work that the IB moderates. It is part of the Diploma, not an optional extra. Theory of Knowledge and the extended essay have their own criteria. University admissions offices often ask for predicted grades and then the final Diploma result — check each institution.
How grades are used
Subject performance is reported on the IB scale. Core outcomes and Diploma rules follow official documents. “Earning the IB Diploma” is a package of subjects plus core requirements, not a single paper score.
What useful practice looks like
Build knowledge through retrieval. Then produce complete responses under paper conditions. Mark against current criteria. Mock exams help only when they match the live guide and you rewrite misses closed-book. Reading model answers is useful after you have already attempted.
