ICAS test strategies for English, maths, science and online questions

Cross-subject methods for text evidence, numerical modelling, scientific data, digital information and online pacing.

Match every method to the subject and year level your school entered. These habits transfer across many unfamiliar ICAS tasks.

English and reading

Use wording, structure and visual features as evidence. Test vocabulary in context and distinguish an inference supported by clues from an attractive outside fact.

Mathematics

Represent quantities with a diagram, table or equation, label units and estimate. Look for relationships before lengthy calculation and check that the result satisfies all conditions.

Science

Separate observations from explanations. Read axes, units, keys and experimental variables before interpreting a graph or table. Choose the conclusion the evidence supports, not the one that sounds most scientific.

Digital information

Trace sequences and rules carefully, attend to the stated system and test options against every condition. Avoid importing assumptions about familiar software when the question defines its own model.

Online pacing

Read all panels and legends, use review tools as instructed and move on after a supported attempt. Practise on screen without sacrificing careful reading.
