Universities and colleges in Japan
Choose your route, compare the course, then check the current application guide.
Choose your admissions route
Domestic applicants
Compare general selection (一般選抜), school recommendation (学校推薦型選抜) and comprehensive selection (総合型選抜). Check each faculty’s subjects, Common Test requirements, essays, interviews and eligibility. Common Test registration and a university application are separate steps. Residence in Japan alone does not determine your admissions category.
International degree applicants
Check educational eligibility first: a 12-year school education or an accepted equivalent is a common route. Japanese-taught courses may require EJU, JLPT, English scores and a university examination in different combinations. Each faculty decides the subjects, accepted sittings and score thresholds; N2 or N1 alone does not secure admission. English-taught degrees have their own requirements.
Exchange and visiting students
Start with your home university’s partner list and nomination process. An exchange place is usually non-degree study; direct visiting programmes can have different fees and credit rules. Confirm the teaching language, course restrictions, semester dates, accommodation and credit transfer before accepting.
University, junior college or vocational college?
University · 大学
Usually a four-year bachelor’s degree; some professional courses take six years. The directory also includes graduate-only universities. Compare the actual faculty, laboratory and campus.
Junior college · 短期大学
Usually two or three years, leading to an associate degree. Check qualifications, placement support and the receiving university’s transfer conditions if you plan further study.
College of technology · 高専
KOSEN offers a technical route with laboratory work and practical engineering. The usual programme begins after junior high school and lasts five years; international entry is generally into year three. Verify the individual entry route.
Specialised training school · 専修学校
Postsecondary professional courses can lead to a diploma or advanced diploma. The register also contains secondary and general courses: listing alone does not establish a higher-education award or international admission eligibility. Ask the school about the specific course.
Plan an exchange semester
Before nomination
Check your home institution’s agreement, GPA requirement and internal deadline. Build a provisional course list and request written credit approval. Confirm whether Japanese-taught classes need a language certificate or placement test.
Before departure
Confirm nomination and host acceptance separately. Check course availability, exam dates, housing, insurance and the host’s immigration instructions. Exchange students normally pay tuition to their home institution under the agreement; direct visiting students normally pay the Japanese host. Budget for living costs in either case.
How much does university cost in Japan?
First-year academic costs
JASSO’s published averages are about ¥820,000 at national universities, ¥910,000 at local public universities and ¥1,300,000 at private universities excluding medicine, dentistry and pharmacy. Junior-college averages are about ¥600,000 public and ¥1,200,000 private. These include admission and tuition fees; each school’s current fee schedule takes precedence.
Living costs and funding
JASSO cites ¥105,000 per month excluding study and research costs, from its 2023 privately financed student survey. Use it as a dated baseline, then price your actual city and housing. Add deposits, travel, insurance and materials. Check MEXT, JASSO, school scholarships and fee reductions separately; selection, nomination and funding are not guaranteed.
Careers after studying in Japan
Assess the career evidence
Ask for the latest faculty-level graduate destinations, survey year, response rate and the denominator behind any employment percentage. Separate employment from further study, and ask for international-student outcomes where available. Compare internships, career-office support, alumni access and the jobs the course prepares you for.
Prepare for recruitment
Build internship and application deadlines into your study plan. Practise explaining projects in Japanese, writing entry sheets and interviewing. Some employers use SPI; confirm the assessment in the invitation. SPI is a recruitment aptitude assessment, separate from university entrance tests and JLPT.
For international graduates
Discuss your intended role, degree and post-study route with the university’s international and career offices. Follow current official residence-status guidance before working. An exchange semester or an English-taught degree does not itself promise a job or work permission.
Our overall review: how to choose
For a full degree
Prioritise course content, entry requirements and the total cost through graduation. A broad university can suit exploration; a specialised institution can suit a defined profession. Check the qualification and transfer options before deciding.
For exchange
Prioritise transferable modules, teaching language, semester fit and housing support. A famous university is less useful to your plan if the modules you need are closed to exchange students.
For a career in Japan
Compare access to practical projects, internships and Japanese communication support alongside graduate destinations. Review rankings as one signal, then use an open day and conversations with current students to test your shortlist. These are editorial comparison criteria, not student ratings.

Selected institutions, ordered by QS global rank. QS and THE use different methods; these are global positions, not entry scores or employment rankings. “=” means tied; a band stays a band. A blank means this comparison has no verified value. Colleges without a global rank remain in the directory.
