How to learn Mandarin with short reading practice

Original Chinese study material with English explanations. Simplified Chinese with pinyin; beginner, intermediate and advanced are editorial difficulty labels.

Start with a small task you can attempt: learn the sounds in a sentence, read it, cover the English and explain its meaning. Check the explanation only after an attempt. Then change one detail and make your own sentence. Return later and try it without the support. Mandarin is a Chinese language; Standard Mandarin is called 普通话.

我每天读一段中文。

Wǒ měitiān dú yí duàn Zhōngwén.

I read a passage of Chinese every day.

今天我先读,再看翻译。

Jīntiān wǒ xiān dú, zài kàn fānyì.

Today I read first, then look at the translation.

An editorial beginner label is not an HSK or CEFR assessment. Set your reading difficulty from what you can understand and explain, not just a promised timeline or a word count.

Which action checks independent understanding?

  1. Explain the passage before revealing English
  2. Leave English open and copy it
  3. Count pages without reading
Answer and explanation

Explain the passage before revealing English. An unaided explanation gives you something concrete to compare with the meaning.
