秋天 (qiūtiān) means autumn. Compare an original plan with what the characters actually do after the weather changes.
秋天到了，公园里的树叶变黄了。
Qiūtiān dào le, gōngyuán lǐ de shùyè biàn huáng le.
Autumn has arrived, and the leaves in the park have turned yellow.
我们本来想去爬山，可是早上开始下雨。
Wǒmen běnlái xiǎng qù pá shān, kěshì zǎoshang kāishǐ xià yǔ.
We originally wanted to go hiking, but it started raining in the morning.
下午雨停了，我们就在家附近散步。
Xiàwǔ yǔ tíng le, wǒmen jiù zài jiā fùjìn sànbù.
The rain stopped in the afternoon, so we took a walk near home.
本来 introduces the original situation or intention. It does not by itself tell you what finally happened.
