Rhetorical questions with 难道
Original Chinese study material with English explanations. Simplified Chinese with pinyin; beginner, intermediate and advanced are editorial difficulty labels.
A rhetorical question often presents an expected answer as obvious or challenges a claim. 难道 (nándào) can introduce that stance, often with 吗 at the end.
难道我们不应该先检查吗?
Nándào wǒmen bù yīnggāi xiān jiǎnchá ma?
Should we not check first?
谁不想有更多时间呢?
Shéi bù xiǎng yǒu gèng duō shíjiān ne?
Who would not want more time?
A rhetorical question expresses a stance; it does not supply evidence. Consider whether the implied answer is justified.
Try it
The speaker asks 难道证据不重要吗? What stance is implied?
- Evidence matters
- Evidence is never needed
- The time is unknown
Answer and explanation
Evidence matters. The negative question challenges the idea that evidence is unimportant.
