学 and 学习: learning and studying

学 (xué) and 学习 (xuéxí) both concern learning. 学 is common with a subject or practical skill; 学习 can stand alone as study or take a subject as an object.
我在学游泳。
Wǒ zài xué yóuyǒng.
I am learning to swim.
她每天学习中文。
Tā měitiān xuéxí Zhōngwén.
She studies Chinese every day.
教 (jiāo) is to teach; 学 is to learn. 学生 is a student, not a verb phrase.
