ACER scholarship tests and HAST: check the assessment’s name

Distinguish a provider from its assessment programmes so that your preparation follows the school’s actual instructions.

A provider can offer more than one assessment

ACER publishes information for both scholarship testing and the Higher Ability Selection Test, HAST. Finding the provider’s name alone is not enough to identify which assessment a school requires.

Read the exact name and level in the invitation. Keep that detail in your preparation notes so a general search phrase does not replace the school’s actual instructions.

Compare two fictional invitations

Invitation A names the Higher Ability Selection Test for a school programme. Invitation B names an ACER scholarship assessment. Even if both involve reasoning and writing, you should not assume that their section arrangements, sample booklets or registration processes are the same.

The practical response is to follow each invitation to its official information. Similar skills can justify shared foundational practice, but they do not establish that one full mock reproduces the other assessment.

Separate skill practice from format familiarisation

A reading exercise can train finding evidence. A numerical exercise can train ratios. Those tasks have value across several contexts when their purpose is stated clearly.

Format familiarisation is narrower: it concerns the named assessment’s instructions and presentation. Use current provider or school material for that task. Keep a private practice result attached to its own questions and conditions.

Choose your next step from the confirmed name

If the invitation says HAST, use the HAST guide to check the relevant practice level. If it names another assessment, confirm its details before choosing a timed paper. Do not substitute a convenient label because it appears higher in search results.

Review methods with changed examples and leave actual registration, eligibility and selection questions with the administering school. A study guide can support preparation without determining the school’s decision.

Try it yourself

A page says an assessment is “by ACER” but does not name the programme. Can you identify it as HAST from that alone?

Show the answer and explanation

No.

Provider identity does not uniquely identify the assessment programme. The invitation or school must supply the exact name.
