Japanese dates and days: read a simple schedule accurately

Separate dates, weekdays and durations, then practise extracting the detail a short schedule actually asks for.

Which kind of time information do you need?

A date names a calendar day, a weekday names its position in the week and a duration tells you how long something lasts. Identify the kind before deciding what to read aloud or write down.

Many early date readings need word-level practice. Do not assume you can build every date by adding a number reading to 日. Keep a reliable date chart nearby while learning, then cover it for the actual check.

Read a notice in two passes

Original notice: 図書館は四月一日から開いています。月曜日は休みです。The library is open from 1 April. It is closed on Mondays. 一日 here is ついたち, a calendar date.

First extract the opening date. Then extract the recurring closed day. The notice does not tell you which weekday 1 April falls on. Do not invent a year and calculate an answer to a question the notice never asks.

The same written form can require a different reading

一日 can also be read いちにち when it means one day. Compare 四月一日 with 一日だけ休みます. In the second expression the point is a duration, not the first day of a month.

Keep these examples on separate lines and explain the context. Memorising one pronunciation for a written form will not reliably answer both. A small context note is more useful than an unqualified “always” rule.

Make a small schedule-reading task

Write three events with a date, weekday or duration. Ask one precise question about each. Read the relevant expression aloud, then answer without reopening the chart.

Review errors by category: numeral, date reading or information selection. If you read the date correctly but answered with the weekday, practise identifying what the question requests.

Try it yourself

In 四月一日に会います。, does 一日 name a calendar date or a duration? What is its reading here?

Show the answer and explanation

A calendar date: ついたち.

The month establishes a date expression. This differs from いちにち when 一日 means a duration of one day.
