JLPT listening practice: recover the detail you missed
Review a short listening attempt by separating an unknown expression, a sound-recognition problem and a missed decision.
Attempt before opening a transcript
Listen once under the task’s conditions and record your answer. Note whether you understood the situation, the requested detail and the final decision. These observations make the replay purposeful.
Opening the transcript immediately can make comprehension feel easier without showing what you heard independently. Keep the first attempt and the assisted review as different pieces of evidence.
Track a decision that changes
Original practice dialogue: A says, 三時に会いましょう。B replies, 三時は無理です。四時はどうですか。A answers, では、四時に。The final meeting time is four o’clock. The first number is a proposal, not the decision.
On a replay, mark the phrase rejecting the first time and the phrase accepting the second. If you heard both numbers but chose three, the problem was decision tracking rather than recognising the word for four.
Choose the review that matches the error
If you cannot identify a known word in the audio, compare that short stretch with the transcript and listen again. If the expression itself is unknown, learn its meaning before replaying. If every word is clear but the answer is wrong, explain the exchange.
Use a short segment, then return to the complete dialogue. Repeating one isolated syllable indefinitely does not test whether you can follow the speaker’s changing intention.
Finish with a fresh listening decision
After reviewing, attempt a different short dialogue without text. Record the final arrangement or next action before checking the answer. This distinguishes learning the method from remembering the reviewed clip.
Use official samples to understand task presentation and verify what materials you are using. Keep reading and listening practice connected, while recognising that understanding written text does not automatically establish listening comprehension.
Try it yourself
Read this original exchange aloud, then hide it: 月曜日ですか。いいえ、火曜日です。Which day was confirmed?
Show the answer and explanation
Tuesday: 火曜日.
月曜日 was proposed and rejected. The confirmed information comes after いいえ.
