JLPT N4 vocabulary practice: choose a word from its context
Use objects, actions and surrounding clauses to distinguish related vocabulary, with a small original practice task.
What does context add to a vocabulary answer?
The topic, object and action constrain which word makes sense. Begin by explaining what happens in the sentence. Only then compare the options. A familiar translation can still be wrong if the action or situation does not fit.
Mark the words that supplied the decision. “It sounded right” is difficult to reuse. “This verb takes the thing being borrowed as its object” gives you a concrete point to practise next time.
Distinguish borrowing from lending
友だちに本を借りました。means “I borrowed a book from a friend.” 友だちに本を貸しました。means “I lent a book to a friend.” The sentences are similar, but 借りる and 貸す put the speaker on different sides of the exchange.
Draw an arrow for the book. In the first sentence it moves towards the speaker; in the second it moves away. The arrow makes the difference explicit before you return to the Japanese wording.
Change one clue and test the choice again
After solving an item, change the action or the people involved. If your answer stays the same only because you remember the previous option letter, you have not retested the meaning. Say the changed sentence without looking.
Keep close vocabulary together when the contrast helps, but give each word a separate example. An unlabelled pile of synonyms can hide differences in who acts, what moves and how formal the situation is.
Use a small context notebook
For each missed item, save the sentence, your wrong word and one sentence explaining why it fails. Add a fresh correct example. A short record is easier to revisit than a screenshot with no account of your reasoning.
At the next session, cover the answer and identify the clue again. The level label is a way to organise practice; these original examples are not an official exhaustive N4 word list.
Try it yourself
You receive your friend’s umbrella and will return it tomorrow. Choose: 友だちに傘を借りました/貸しました。
Show the answer and explanation
友だちに傘を借りました。
The umbrella moves from the friend to you, so you borrowed it. 貸しました would describe lending it to the friend.
