ひと

hito

Meaning

Person; people

Two original examples

あの人は私の先生です。

That person is my teacher.

部屋に三人います。

There are three people in the room.

Usage and distinctions

人 alone is usually ひと. In 日本人 it is じん; in 三人 it is にん. 一人 and 二人 are special: ひとり and ふたり. A character has readings in particular words, not one pronunciation for every context.
