Usage and distinctions
妻 is a neutral way to refer to one’s wife. 奥さん is often used politely for someone else’s wife. 家内 also refers to one’s own wife but carries a more traditional tone. A spouse’s name is also common in conversation; choose the term with the relationship and setting in mind.
