NAPLAN common mistakes and the learning habits that fix them

Avoid rushed reading, prompt drift, context-free grammar choices, missing units and online navigation oversights.

NAPLAN mistakes are useful when they point to a teachable action. Review the process without attaching shame to the student or predicting a proficiency level from one practice set.

Five frequent patterns

  1. Answering reading from memory of the topic. Return to the supplied text and locate evidence.
  2. Drifting away from the writing prompt. Re-read the task after planning and during revision.
  3. Choosing grammar by sound alone. Check the whole sentence and its intended meaning.
  4. Ignoring units or scale. Label quantities before calculating and compare the result with an estimate.
  5. Missing online content. Check tabs, scroll areas, legends and review screens deliberately.

A better correction loop

Name the skill, model one example, let the student attempt a fresh example independently, then revisit it days later. Repeating the identical question immediately can measure memory rather than learning.

Avoid over-interpreting practice

Commercial practice scores are not official NAPLAN results. Use them to select the next skill session, not to claim a proficiency category or compare children.
