What is the NAPLAN exam? Years, domains and results

What the NAPLAN exam is: NAPLAN tests for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9, covering literacy and numeracy skills — not a final judgment of a child or school.

The NAPLAN exam is Australia’s national literacy and numeracy assessment. NAPLAN tests run for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. They give a point-in-time view of literacy and numeracy skills. They are not a final judgment of a student, teacher, or school.

The four assessment domains

Students complete reading, writing, conventions of language, and numeracy. Reading asks students to interpret varied texts. Conventions covers spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Numeracy samples number and algebra, measurement and space, and statistics and probability. Writing uses a prompt and common marking criteria.

Online delivery

Most students sit online. Branching in some domains means later questions can respond to performance. Writing arrangements can differ by year level and approved circumstances. Schools and test administration authorities set the local timetable and accessibility arrangements.

What results mean

Results report achievement using the current proficiency framework and domain information. Families should read the official explanatory material and discuss patterns with the school. A single NAPLAN exam result cannot capture every curriculum outcome or classroom contribution.

Appropriate preparation

Use ACARA’s public demonstration site to learn the item tools. Then keep normal literacy and numeracy learning. Short original practice can reduce interface uncertainty. Intensive score-focused cramming is not the purpose of NAPLAN tests.
