OC test common mistakes: what young candidates can fix
Correct common OC habits such as guessing from one word, skipping units, forgetting a logic rule and spending too long on one item.
Calling every wrong answer “careless” does not teach a replacement behaviour. Give the error a precise, neutral name and practise the next action.
Five fixable habits
- Matching one familiar word. Read the full option and prove it from the passage.
- Doing arithmetic immediately. Show the relationship and units first.
- Using only one logic rule. Tick each condition as the option is checked.
- Changing correct answers without evidence. Change only when a specific clue or calculation supports it.
- Getting trapped by one hard item. Use a time boundary and preserve the remaining section.
Improve the review conversation
Ask the student to teach the corrected method using a fresh example. Keep praise attached to useful behaviours—showing evidence, checking units, moving on—not to a score or label.
Beware familiar-paper gains
A rising score on the same paper may reflect memory. Mix in unseen items and revisit a skill after several days to check that the method, not the answer, was learned.
