OC test day tips: a practical checklist for students and families
A low-stress OC test-day routine covering official instructions, arrival, section pacing, uncertainty and the family debrief.
Use the Department’s candidate information as the final authority. The night before, confirm the venue, arrival time and approved items; avoid introducing new strategies.
Set up a normal morning
Choose familiar food, comfortable clothing and a travel plan with margin. Keep adult anxiety out of the departure conversation. A simple reminder—read carefully, show your thinking, move on when needed—is enough.
During the test
Listen to the supervisor, read section instructions and use the practised checkpoints. If unsure, remove options that cannot work and make the best choice available. One difficult question does not predict the rest of the paper.
If there is a problem
The student should alert the supervisor to an immediate issue. Families should follow the Department’s published process for illness, misadventure or adjustments rather than trying to resolve it through a coaching provider.
After the test
Ask first about the experience, not a predicted score. Do not encourage reconstruction or sharing of secure questions. Offers and outcomes follow the official process, and an OC result is only one part of a child’s education.
