OC test section strategies for reading, maths and thinking skills
Age-appropriate methods for finding text evidence, modelling maths and checking logic constraints under a section clock.
The best strategy is a repeatable action the student can remember under pressure. Practise one or two cues per section rather than a long list of tricks.
Reading: point to the proof
After choosing an answer, ask, “Which words in the text support it?” For vocabulary, substitute each option into the sentence. For inference, combine clues without adding facts that are not in the passage.
Mathematical reasoning: show the situation
Draw a bar, table, quick diagram or equation before calculating. Write units and estimate. If the answer choices are far apart, an estimate may reveal an impossible result before detailed arithmetic.
Thinking skills: use every rule
Underline constraints and represent order or grouping with initials and slots. A proposed answer must satisfy all rules, not just the first one noticed. For arguments, identify what is claimed and what evidence is offered.
Pacing: protect later questions
Use simple checkpoints based on official timing. If a question remains unclear after a genuine attempt, eliminate options and move on. Practise this choice so moving forward feels controlled rather than like giving up.
