What is the OC test? Opportunity Class placement explained

A family guide to the NSW Opportunity Class Placement Test, its reasoning sections and its place in the official application process.

The Opportunity Class Placement Test supports entry to designated Year 5 and 6 classes for high-potential and gifted students in NSW public schools. Families apply through the Department of Education process; the test is an assessment within that process, not a stand-alone enrolment.

What the test assesses

Candidates work through reading, mathematical reasoning and thinking skills. Questions are intended to test how students interpret unfamiliar information, identify relationships and reason toward a supported answer. The Department’s current test page controls exact timing, order and administration.

From test to offer

An OC result is not the same as an automatic offer. School choices, available places and the Department’s placement rules matter. Families should use official information for applications, adjustments, illness/misadventure and outcome dates.

Preparation that transfers

Begin with official familiarisation material, then use unseen original questions. Ask the student to explain why the correct option works and why alternatives fail. That explanation exposes fragile guesses and builds methods that can transfer to a new problem.

Keep the experience proportionate

OC candidates are primary-aged. Short, regular sessions with rest and normal school life are more sustainable than long cramming blocks. Preparation should build confidence with challenge, not make one test the measure of a child.
