Most common characters are 7 to 12 strokes
Of the 3,500 common characters, 2,226 have 7 to 12 strokes. Simplified and traditional forms of the same word often do not share a stroke count.
Stroke order is a check on a character you are learning to produce. It is not a personality test, and it is not the same number in every region. The practical fact, if you are writing the common Chinese set, is that the characters cluster in a band you can actually finish.
Where the 3,500 sit
The set is level 1 of the 2013 table: 3,500 characters. The stroke counts here are not printed in that table. They are the stroke lists in Make Me a Hanzi, and all 3,500 characters matched. Treat the bars as a count of those lists, not as a ministry statistic.
[[chart:ld-stroke-load]]The mode is 9 strokes (414 characters), then 8 (409), then 10 (389). From 7 through 12 strokes there are 344 + 409 + 414 + 389 + 346 + 324 = 2,226 characters, about 64% of the common set. One-stroke and two-stroke characters are a handful (2 and 19). The long tail, 17 strokes and up, is 113 characters. A session of fifteen common characters is usually a session of characters in that middle band, not a session of 25-stroke rarities.
Switch to the eight pairs. 门 is 3 strokes and 門 is 8. 马 is 3 and 馬 is 10. 龙 is 5 and 龍 is 16. 学 is 8 and 學 is 16. Simplified and traditional are not “the same character, fewer pen lifts” in a way you can guess. If you are writing for mainland use, learn the simplified count. If you are reading Taiwan, Hong Kong, or classical Korean hanja, learn the other. Japanese jōyō shapes are a third column, closer to simplified in some pairs (国) and not a copy of either standard.
Order is a short list of checks
School stroke order, the set taught with China’s 1997 stroke-order norm for general-use characters, is a handful of checks: horizontal before vertical, left-falling before right-falling, top before bottom, left before right, outside before inside, the frame closes last, and a symmetrical character is drawn from the centre outward. They have exceptions. They are still the checks. Calligraphy’s “eight principles” of 永 are eight brush techniques on a character that has five strokes in the modern count. Five is the stroke count. Eight is not.
Tracing a character while looking at it feels like writing. Cover the model and write it from the word. That is the rep. Misses go back on the card, which is the same loop as remembering a kanji, not a new theory.
What to do with a character you can already copy
Pick eight from the middle of the chart, not eight you already draw as decorations. For each: word on the front, character on the back, stroke count as a check after you write, not as the thing you memorise instead of the word. Then one traditional or Japanese form only if you actually read that standard. The lookup path, if you cannot get the reading at all, is radical plus remaining strokes.
Why this method works
Stroke order is a constraint on production, like a fingering. Watching an animation is recognition. Writing from a covered word is the rep that the retrieval studies actually measured — on pairs and on prose, not on a stroke-order product trial. The histogram only tells you the rep is short: most common characters are a dozen strokes, not a mural.
Run this session
Twenty minutes. Eight characters from the 7-to-12 band. No tattoo characters unless you can already write these.
- 0–3 min. Glance at the first chart view. Name the busiest stroke counts. They are 8, 9, and 10. You do not need the exact bar heights.
- 3–15 min. Word on the front, blank square on the back. Write the character. Then check stroke count against the list you trust for your standard. A wrong count means one more write, not a lecture.
- 15–20 min. One pair from the second view, the standard you do not usually write. If you write simplified 门, write 門 once and stop. Knowing they differ is the point. Collecting both for every word is a second curriculum.
Common traps
- 永 has eight strokes. Fix: eight is the number of brush techniques in the old model. The modern stroke count is five.
- Tracing while looking. Fix: cover the model. If you cannot start, you do not know it yet.
- One stroke count for “the” character across regions. Fix: 龙 is 5 and 龍 is 16. Pick the standard you read.
Produce them in Study Lab. An animation of the strokes is a model. The test is the blank square.
