UCAT practice test guide: VR, Decision Making, QR, and SJT (2025 format)

How to sit timed Verbal Reasoning, Decision Making, Quantitative Reasoning, and Situational Judgement for undergrad medicine pathways — without treating AI chat as the study session.

UCAT is the undergraduate medicine, dentistry and related admissions test used across the UK, Australia and New Zealand. From 2025 the live exam has three cognitive subtests plus Situational Judgement — Abstract Reasoning has been withdrawn. Know the 2025 clocks

  • Verbal Reasoning — passage inference under a short clock.
  • Decision Making — syllogisms, logic, probability, Venn and argument strength.
  • Quantitative Reasoning — tables, rates, percentages and projections with calculator discipline.
  • Situational Judgement — appropriateness and importance ratings on clinical-style scenarios (banded separately from the cognitive total).

A four-week active loop

  1. Week 1 — format only. One short VR cluster and one short QR table set untimed. Tag which stimulus families slow you down.
  2. Week 2 — clock on. Timed Decision Making and QR half-sits. Review only wrong items — rewrite the method, do not re-read a chat solution.
  3. Week 3 — SJT scenarios. Practise appropriateness and importance on shared scenarios; note where mid-band answers (not only “very appropriate / very inappropriate”) apply.
  4. Week 4 — full rehearsal. One Practice Hub UCAT mock that samples VR, DM, QR and SJT under the official section clocks.

What not to do

  • Do not treat unrestricted AI chat as UCAT prep — assisted fluency often collapses when the chat is closed.
  • Do not ignore SJT because it is banded separately; universities still use those bands.
  • Do not skip Quantitative Reasoning calculator practice; pace errors cost more than content gaps for many sitters.
