SMO vs UKMT: olympiad pathway or Mathematical Challenge?
SMO / SASMO and UKMT Challenges are different school contests. Practise the paper on the school letter; use the other only for extra unseen items.
SMO vs UKMT is a pathway question, not a ranking. UKMT Mathematical Challenges (JMC, IMC, SMC) are UK school first-round papers. SMO and SASMO sit on a Singapore / international olympiad pathway with their own calendars.
Clocks and style
- UKMT JMC / IMC: 25 multiple-choice · 60 minutes · no calculator.
- UKMT SMC: 90 minutes; 2026 trials integer answers on the last three questions.
- SASMO / SMO: banded olympiad papers — confirm the live time and answer style with the school.
How to practise
If the school letter names UKMT, sit that Challenge band first. If it names SASMO or SMO, sit that band first. Peer contests are useful for extra unseen items after you have one full timed sit in your own paper.
