STAT Written English method for two timed responses
Move from prompt analysis to controlled, purposeful writing without relying on memorised essays.
Respond to the supplied idea
Begin by paraphrasing the prompt and identifying the tension or question it raises. A memorised essay is risky because it can sound polished while failing to engage with the actual task.
Plan visible movement
- Choose a controlling idea.
- Give each paragraph a distinct purpose.
- Add specific examples and explain their relevance.
- Reserve time to check structure and sentences.
Review for control
Ask whether the introduction establishes direction, whether each paragraph advances it, and whether qualifications clarify rather than weaken the response. Repair recurring sentence errors in isolation, then write a new response to prove the correction transfers.
Try the questions before reviewing the answers
Attempt before reading a model. Diagnose the exact reasoning or writing decision, make one repair and test it on unseen material.
