The Feynman technique: explain without notes, then make cards

Before you start

Choose one concept from school, university or professional study. Bring a blank page, the source and a timer. Keep the source closed during the first explanation. The aim is to discover where your explanation stops working.

Why this method works

Explaining while notes are open can hide weak links. Explaining from memory makes you choose the sequence, define terms and connect cause with effect.

A vague sentence or missing step is useful evidence. Check that gap, correct it and turn the point into a card rather than copying the page.

Session script

1. 00:00–02:00: Write one question the explanation must answer.
2. 02:00–08:00: Explain without notes.
3. 08:00–12:00: Mark vague words, logical jumps and missing examples.
4. 12:00–17:00: Open the source and correct only those gaps.
5. 17:00–22:00: Make two or three cards and answer them once.

Worked examples

Example 1: Biology

“Enzymes make reactions easier” hides the mechanism. A card can ask: “How does an enzyme lower activation energy?”

Example 2: Economics

“Higher interest rates reduce inflation” skips the chain from borrowing costs to demand and price pressure. Put the chain and a limiting condition on separate cards.

In tests and exams

Use the method for concepts you must explain, compare or apply. After repairing the explanation, practise the required form: short response, calculation, diagram or paragraph plan. Plain language is a diagnostic step; restore precise technical terms.

4. Standard: Turn one skipped link into a card.
5. Challenge: Add an example that tests the boundary of the concept.

Answers

1. Ask for a mechanism or relationship.
2. Name the entities and the direction of change.
3. Check that each step causes or enables the next.
4. The card should isolate the missing link.
5. Change one important condition and explain the outcome.
