VCE exam strategies for extended responses, data and calculations
Cross-study strategies for task words, evidence, visible working, source and data interpretation, and mark-based pacing.
Begin with the specifications for your current study. Use cross-study strategies only through the knowledge and skills that paper assesses.
Read the task boundary
Underline the action, content, stimulus and mark value. Decide what evidence must appear before drafting. A long response is not automatically a complete response.
Connect evidence to judgment
For extended answers, organise claims around the question and explain the significance of examples. Avoid memorised paragraphs that mention the topic without addressing the task.
Show quantitative reasoning
Write formulas, substitutions, units and appropriate precision. Use estimates and graphs to test whether a result is sensible. Follow study-specific calculator and technology rules.
Interpret sources and data
Refer to exact features, trends, anomalies or limitations. Description is only the first step; explain how the evidence answers the question.
Practise checkpoints
Allocate time from marks and section demands. Preserve time for high-value responses and a final scan for missed parts, units and task alignment.
