What is VCE? Victorian Certificate of Education explained

What is VCE? The Victorian Certificate of Education is senior secondary education in Victoria — studies, units, school assessment, exams, and study scores.

What is VCE? The Victorian Certificate of Education is Victoria’s senior secondary education certificate. VCAA administers it. Students complete an approved program of studies and units. Assessment arrangements vary by study. People also write “Certificate of Education VCE” when they mean the same qualification.

Study designs define learning

Each VCE study has a current study design. It describes outcomes, key knowledge, skills, and assessment. A course summary from a previous accreditation period may not match the examination you will sit. Record the applicable study design and examination specifications.

School and external assessment

School-assessed coursework, school-assessed tasks, and external examinations contribute under official rules. Schools run local assessment. VCAA publishes examination material, timetables, and policies. Check the current documents — not an old revision site.

Study score, ATAR, and tertiary selection

A study score describes how you performed in one VCE study relative to other students in that study. VCE results, study scores, and the ATAR are connected but distinct. VTAC calculates the ATAR for eligible students. A raw practice mark is not a guaranteed study score.

Prepare from current evidence

Use the study design, examination specifications, VCAA past examinations, and examination reports. Original practice helps with unseen transfer. Official documents still control format and expectations.
