WA ASET common mistakes and how candidates can fix them
Correct unsupported reading, generic writing, premature arithmetic, partial pattern rules and poor timing.
A useful review identifies where your reasoning went wrong. Replace “careless” with a precise cause and a next action.
Five recurring patterns
- Reading from outside knowledge. Point to the exact supporting clue.
- Writing a memorised response. Rebuild purpose and progression from the prompt.
- Calculating before modelling. Represent quantities, constraints and units first.
- Accepting a partial visual rule. Test every row or column.
- Protecting one difficult question. Move on at the practised boundary.
Do not over-read practice scores
Original third-party questions are useful drills for building ASET skills. Compare skill patterns over time, not one percentage with an invented cut-off.
Complete the correction
Explain the missed clue, solve again from blank and later attempt a fresh item using the same method. The delayed fresh item is the real check.
