Question 1

Which resources are most effective for preparing for the WA ASET?

Accepted Answer

Timed practice on four components is the effective ASET preparation: Reading Comprehension, Communicating Ideas in Writing, Quantitative Reasoning, and Abstract Reasoning. RubricMark sits those clocks at rubricmark.com/aset. ASET is WA GATE, not an Academic Assessment Services (AAS) scholarship test — AAS skills map to Edutest plus a HAST abstract drill. ASET runs once a year, typically in March, for programs including Perth Modern.

Question 2

Can you suggest a practical study plan for the ASET?

Accepted Answer

Work backwards six weeks from the March sitting. Weeks 1–2: one component a day so reading, quantitative, and abstract formats are familiar. Weeks 3–4: one timed RubricMark trial a week, then a drill on the weakest component. Weeks 5–6: writing under the clock, then submit for marks after you write.

Question 3

What is the ASET test in WA?

Accepted Answer

The Academic Selective Entrance Test (ASET) ranks students for Western Australia’s Gifted and Talented (GATE) academic programs, including Perth Modern. It is a timed reasoning test with four components: Reading Comprehension, Communicating Ideas in Writing, Quantitative Reasoning, and Abstract Reasoning.

Question 4

When is the ASET held?

Accepted Answer

ASET runs once per year, typically in March, with applications opening earlier via the WA GATE portal. Confirm your intake year and centre, and start timed trials at least six weeks out.

Question 5

Is ASET the same as an AAS scholarship test?

Accepted Answer

No. ASET is Western Australia’s GATE entrance test. Academic Assessment Services (AAS) is a different scholarship provider — practise those skills on the Edutest page, then add a HAST abstract drill for figural or spatial items.
