WA ASET section strategies for reading, writing and reasoning
Practical methods for text evidence, written communication, quantitative modelling and abstract pattern testing.
Match practice to the components listed in current official information. Each section rewards a distinct way of showing thinking.
Reading comprehension
Return to the text for evidence and distinguish explicit detail from inference. Test vocabulary in context and reject options that are generally true but unsupported.
Communicating ideas in writing
Identify purpose, audience and form. Plan a clear development, use specific details and reserve time to revise meaning and sentence control. Respond to the actual stimulus instead of forcing a prepared story.
Quantitative reasoning
Represent the relationship with a diagram, table or equation. Track units, estimate and check whether the result satisfies every condition. Look for efficient structure before lengthy arithmetic.
Abstract reasoning
Compare number, position, rotation, shading and combination one feature at a time. A rule must explain all completed relationships. Use option differences to identify which feature needs testing next.
Pacing
Practise checkpoints from the official clock and move on after a supported attempt. One hard pattern should not consume marks available elsewhere.
