What is WA ASET? Gifted and Talented selection explained

Understand the Academic Selective Entrance Test, the ability and achievement areas it samples and its role in WA selection.

The Academic Selective Entrance Test (ASET) supports selection for eligible academic Gifted and Talented programs in Western Australia. The WA Department of Education owns the application and placement process, while official assessment delivery information identifies the provider and candidate arrangements.

What candidates may encounter

ASET information commonly describes reading comprehension, communicating ideas in writing, quantitative reasoning and abstract reasoning. These areas combine learned literacy with the ability to identify relationships and solve unfamiliar problems. Always use the current candidate information for exact components and timing.

Assessment is not the whole application

Eligibility, preferences, available places and any program-specific requirements belong to the Department’s current process. A practice score cannot guarantee selection, because it is not an official result and does not reproduce the applicant cohort.

Appropriate preparation

Learn the official format, then practise reasoning on unseen material. For writing, produce complete responses rather than memorising ornamental phrases. For objective work, explain the relationship or evidence before checking the answer.

Verify each cycle

Dates, venues, entry years and procedures can change. Families should revisit the WA Department pages and candidate communication for the application year rather than relying on an old coaching calendar.
