HSC exam strategies for essays, calculations and source questions
Cross-course strategies for reading NESA verbs, planning responses, showing working, using sources and pacing by marks.
Start with the current course examination specifications. These cross-course habits help only when adapted to the paper in front of you.
Translate the task
Underline the directive verb, content boundary and any supplied stimulus. Turn the question into a small checklist. A polished response to the wrong scope cannot recover full value.
Plan extended responses
Choose a line of argument and evidence before drafting. Build paragraphs around claims that answer the question, not around memorised topic headings. Use precise examples and connect them to judgment.
Show quantitative method
Write formulas, substitutions, units and appropriate precision. Estimate and check whether the answer makes sense. Visible method makes reasoning clear and catches transcription errors.
Interrogate sources
Use the exact features of the source, then apply relevant knowledge. Do not paraphrase a stimulus without explaining its significance.
Pace by marks and sections
Set checkpoints before the exam and protect time for high-value work. If a small item stalls, leave space and return after securing accessible marks.
