What is the HSC? Courses, school assessment and examinations explained
Understand how NSW senior courses, school-based assessment and external examinations contribute to the Higher School Certificate.
The Higher School Certificate is the credential awarded to eligible students who complete NSW senior secondary requirements. It combines course study, school-based assessment and, for examined courses, external HSC examinations under NESA rules.
Requirements come first
Students must meet current patterns of study, course and assessment requirements. Schools manage enrolment and school-based tasks, while NESA publishes syllabuses, examination specifications, timetables and rules. Confirm personal eligibility and entries with the school.
Assessment is course-specific
An English essay, mathematics paper, science response and practical or performance course are not assessed in the same way. Each syllabus and assessment schedule defines outcomes, components and weightings. Old summaries can become inaccurate when courses change.
HSC and the ATAR
The HSC and ATAR are related but distinct. NESA manages the HSC; the Universities Admissions Centre calculates the ATAR under its published process for eligible students. Direct ATAR questions to UAC and credential questions to NESA or the school.
Prepare from official documents
Use the current syllabus, examination specifications, sample materials and NESA papers. Original practice can add unfamiliarity, but it should be marked against the demands of the applicable course.
