JLPT N5 vocabulary: move from recognising words to recalling them
Build a small vocabulary session around readings, meaning and one useful sentence, then check what you can recall without the list.
What should an N5 vocabulary session contain?
Choose six to ten words from a short text you can mostly understand. Keep the reading, a meaning that fits that text and a short example. A long downloaded list gives you material, but it does not tell you which words you can use.
Separate three questions: can you read the word, understand it in a sentence and recall it when the meaning is given? Record the question you missed. Repeating a translation will not fix a reading you cannot produce.
Connect the word to a complete sentence
For 図書館(としょかん), use 図書館で本を読みます。— “I read a book at the library.” The sentence connects the place to an action. Cover 図書館, leave the rest visible and try to supply the missing word and its reading.
Next change the location: 家で本を読みます。The action stays the same. This small change checks that you understand the place word rather than remembering the visual shape of the original card.
Avoid testing several unknown things at once
If a card contains three new words and an unfamiliar verb form, a wrong answer is difficult to interpret. Simplify the sentence until the target word is the main unknown. Add complexity after you can retrieve it.
A word is not mastered because you recognise it immediately after seeing its answer. Leave a gap, mix it with other words and answer before opening the explanation. Use the result to decide which items return.
A short routine you can repeat
Spend three minutes selecting words, five minutes saying their readings and making sentences, then two minutes testing with the notes covered. These are suggested study timings, not an official exam schedule.
At the next session, begin with yesterday’s words in a different order. Keep difficult words, retire easy ones temporarily and add only a few new items. Use the official N5 samples to see how language appears in questions, rather than treating a private vocabulary list as an official syllabus.
Try it yourself
Read 学校(がっこう), then cover it. Complete: 毎朝、__へ行きます。 Say the missing word and its reading.
Show the answer and explanation
学校(がっこう): 毎朝、学校へ行きます。
The prompt asks for the destination word. Recalling the reading as well as recognising the meaning makes the check more useful.
