How to suspend, bury or reset flashcards in Anki and Ronri

Know when to hide a card for a day, pause it until you choose, or start it again, and how to apply each to a whole deck.

Bury, suspend and reset do different jobs

Burying hides a card until the next day. It is useful when you need to skip a card today, for example because its sibling just appeared. Suspending removes a card from study until you unsuspend it. Resetting sends a card back to the new queue so you learn it again from the start.

Choose by how long you want the change to last. One day: bury. Until you decide: suspend. Start over: reset. Using reset when you only needed a pause throws away useful scheduling.

Suspend a whole deck in Anki

Anki suspends cards rather than decks. Open the Browser, search for the deck with deck:"Deck name", select all the cards, then choose Toggle Suspend. Run the same steps again to unsuspend them.

Suspended cards keep their history and intervals. When you unsuspend a deck after a long break, many cards may be due at once, so lower the new-card limit for a few days while you catch up.

Reset a deck without losing your record

To start a deck again, select its cards in the Browser and use Reset. The cards move to the end of the new queue, and options let you restore their original order or clear the repetition and lapse counts. Your review log is kept.

Reset suits a deck you abandoned long ago, or a deck you imported with someone else’s progress. For a deck you studied recently, reviewing the overdue cards is usually faster than relearning everything.

The same actions in Ronri

In Ronri, you can bury or suspend the current card while studying. In the card browser, select cards and choose Suspend, Unsuspend, Bury or Reset. Cards you forget repeatedly are suspended automatically after eight lapses so you can rewrite them.

A leech is usually a badly written card rather than a bad memory. Split it into smaller cards, add an example or change the prompt before unsuspending it.

Try it yourself

You are going on a two-week holiday without your phone and do not want a deck to build up. Which action fits, and what should you do when you return?

Show the answer and explanation

Suspend the deck’s cards; when you return, unsuspend them and keep new cards low until the due reviews are cleared.

Burying lasts only until the next day, and resetting would throw away your intervals.
