Japanese conditionals and reasons: nara, tara, kara and noni
“If”, “when” and “because” express different relationships. Ask whether a sentence states a reliable result, responds to an assumption, gives a reason, or contradicts an expectation. That relationship guides the Japanese form.
なら: respond to a premise
なら takes a premise and gives a response, often advice. With nouns and な-adjectives, use 学生なら and 静かなら, without だ. With verbs, 行くなら responds to the possibility or intention of going. The advice can concern what to do before the action, so なら is not always “after”. The city 奈良 is also nara in romanisation; grammar なら does not name the city.
京都へ行くなら、先にホテルを予約してください。
きょうとへ いくなら、さきに ホテルを よやくして ください。
静かな場所がいいなら、図書館はどうですか。
しずかな ばしょが いいなら、としょかんは どうですか。
たら: a condition or an action completed first
Build たら from the plain past form plus ら: 行ったら, 食べたら, 安かったら, 静かだったら. Despite the past-form shape, a たら condition can refer to the future. With an arrival followed by a request, it presents the arrival as happening first. It can also introduce an unexpected discovery in a past narrative; it does not always mean a hypothetical “if”.
駅に着いたら、電話してください。
えきに ついたら、でんわして ください。
窓を開けたら、雪が降っていました。
まどを あけたら、ゆきが ふっていました。
と and ば: results and conditions
Conditional と commonly connects a condition with a regular, automatic or observed result. It is not the normal choice for “when you arrive, please call”. The ば form highlights the condition: godan 書く→書けば, ichidan 食べる→食べれば, する→すれば and いい→よければ. Restrictions on requests after ば depend on the predicate and context: 時間があれば来てください is natural, so “never use a request after ば” is too broad.
このボタンを押すと、ドアが開きます。
この ボタンを おすと、ドアが あきます。
時間があれば、少し話しましょう。
じかんが あれば、すこし はなしましょう。
から and ので: give a reason
Both から and ので can give a reason. から often foregrounds the speaker’s justification; ので often presents a circumstance as an explanation, including in polite requests. This is a tendency, not a rule that から is rude. With a noun or な-adjective, compare 雨だから with 雨なので. After an い-adjective use 寒いから or 寒いので, without だ or な. から after a time or place can instead mean “from”.
今日は雨なので、家で勉強します。
きょうは あめなので、いえで べんきょうします。
寒いから、窓を閉めましょう。
さむいから、まどを しめましょう。
のに and ても: against an expectation
Concessive のに presents an established fact followed by an unexpected result, often with surprise or dissatisfaction. Attach it to plain verbs and い-adjectives; nouns and な-adjectives take なのに. ても can mean “even if” or “even though”, including a condition whose outcome does not change the decision. Noun + でも follows the same concessive pattern. Sentence-initial でも can simply mean “but”. A separate のに marks purpose/use, as in 書くのに使う; that is not the contrast taught here.
たくさん勉強したのに、試験に合格しませんでした。
たくさん べんきょうしたのに、しけんに ごうかくしませんでした。
雨が降っても、試合はあります。
あめが ふっても、しあいは あります。
Check the meaning in context
1. Which statement about the hotel advice is supported?
京都へ行くなら、先にホテルを予約してください。
- 予約は旅行前でもよい。
- 必ず京都に着いてから予約する。
- 京都へ行くことは禁止だ。
- 予約はもう終わった。
Answer and explanation
予約は旅行前でもよい。
なら responds to the planned trip, and 先に explicitly asks for booking first. It does not require arriving in Kyoto first, prohibit travel, or state that the booking is complete.
2. Make the standard arrival-then-request pattern.
駅に( )、電話してください。
- 着くと
- 着いたら
- 着くから
- 着いたのに
Answer and explanation
着いたら
着いたら places the call after arrival. Conditional と does not normally introduce this one-off request; から supplies a reason, and のに introduces an unexpected contrast, not the requested sequence.
3. Choose the correct ば form of いい.
天気が( )、散歩に行きましょう。
- いければ
- いいれば
- よければ
- よかったれば
Answer and explanation
よければ
いい uses the よい stem for this conjugation, giving よければ. The other choices are not standard ば forms of いい. This is a state condition, so an invitation can follow.
4. Attach ので to the noun 雨.
今日は( )、家にいます。
- 雨ので
- 雨だので
- 雨のので
- 雨なので
Answer and explanation
雨なので
The plain noun link before ので is な: 雨なので. 雨ので omits it; 雨だので and 雨のので use the wrong joins. Compare the separate reason form 雨だから.
5. What relationship does のに express here?
早く寝たのに、まだ眠いです。
- 早く寝る予定
- 眠いことの禁止
- 予想と違う結果
- 就寝時刻の質問
Answer and explanation
予想と違う結果
The speaker did go to bed early but remains sleepy, contrary to the expected result. This is neither a future plan, a prohibition, nor a question about a clock time.
6. Which meaning fits the match notice?
雨が降っても、試合はあります。
- 雨なら試合は中止だ。
- 雨でも試合をする。
- 試合はすでに終わった。
- 雨が降ることは確実だ。
Answer and explanation
雨でも試合をする。
ても says rain would not cancel the match. It does not announce cancellation, report a completed match, or guarantee that rain will occur; the condition may or may not happen.
Where the rule stops
More than one conditional can fit some situations with a change of emphasis. Learn contrasts rather than treating a short table as a complete rule. The questions specify the intended relationship; they do not imply that every alternative is impossible in every context.
Use it without the choices
Write advice before a trip using なら, then a request after arrival using たら. Add one reason with ので and one unexpected result with のに. Check the noun joins なので and なのに against the adjective joins 寒いので and 寒いのに.
