UCAT time per question, then the interview
UCAT time per question is about 30 seconds for Verbal Reasoning and about 23 for Situational Judgement. Decision Making is closer to a minute. The medicine interview is a separate speaking test.
UCAT time per question is not one two-hour allowance. Verbal Reasoning is 44 questions in 22 minutes. Decision Making is 35 questions in 37 minutes. Quantitative Reasoning is 36 questions in 26 minutes. Situational Judgement is 69 questions in 26 minutes. Divide each clock evenly and you get about 30 seconds, 63 seconds, 43 seconds, and 23 seconds. Those figures are arithmetic, not an official allowance. Decision Making items are not equal: some are one mark, and the multiple-statement items are worth two, with a mark for a partly correct set. Situational Judgement can award a partial mark when your answer is close. The chart is there so you stop treating the test as one blob.

One subtest, the published minutes
There is no negative marking, so an unanswered item is only a lost chance. That is not a reason to sprint the whole paper every night. Unused time on Verbal Reasoning does not become extra time on Decision Making. A week that “covers UCAT” by reading all four strategies is four familiar chapters and no clock.
- Pick one subtest. Use the minutes on the format chart, including nothing from the next subtest. Official question types are on the UCAT ANZ site. A timed drill is on the UCAT page.
- Answer before you look. If a chat or a worked solution is open, you are reading, not sitting. Close it. Guess when the item’s seconds are gone, because a blank scores the same as a wrong answer and a late perfect answer is not how the centre works.
- One miss becomes a card. In Study Lab, the front is the decision you failed to make: the inference you invented, the graph you misread, the Situational Judgement option you treated as opposite when it was only a step away. The back is one line you can say with the explanation covered. Rate it only after you have produced that line.
- Leave the other three subtests for other days. Mixing all four in one evening feels thorough and trains none of the clocks. The booking deadline, which arrives months before test day, is in the calendar piece.
Verbal Reasoning is eleven passages, four questions each. You are not expected to bring outside knowledge. Twenty-two minutes is the whole passage set, not 30 seconds of reading plus unlimited thinking. If you cannot finish, the repair is a shorter first read and a decision, practised on the clock, not another list of tips.
Decision Making is logic, arguments, and statistical information, with an on-screen calculator and with yes/no statements as well as single answers. Sixty-three seconds is an average. A five-statement item will take more, so a one-mark item has to take less. Quantitative Reasoning is charts and numbers, again with a calculator. The skill is noticing which figures the question needs. Situational Judgement is hypothetical clinical or training scenes. It does not test medical knowledge. Each scene can carry several questions. Twenty-three seconds is why “it felt very important” is not a method. You are choosing among close options, and a near miss can still score.
Medicine interview practice after the score
A UCAT cognitive total, however high, is not an offer. The consortium does not publish a universal cut-off. Each university combines the score with academic results and, where it uses one, an interview. Results for the 2026 test went to consortium universities in early September for 2027 entry. Medicine interview practice follows the invitation, not a national timetable. A multiple mini interview is several short stations, each with a new prompt. A panel or a semi-structured interview is one longer conversation. Some courses add a psychometric test before the interview. The minutes on the invitation are the minutes you rehearse. Reading other people’s answers does not train your voice. Speaking does.
- Take one prompt you could actually be asked: why this course, a time you changed your mind, what you would do in a short scene. Speak for the station length without notes. Record it.
- Play it once. Write the sentence that wandered. That sentence is the card. Say it again the next day with the card covered.
- If the course asks for a written answer, you write the draft. Comments after it exists are on assignment feedback. A draft someone else wrote is not your application, and a university that has dropped written statements does not need one. Check the form.

An anecdote has to be yours, specific, and short enough to finish. Inventing a more impressive life is not preparation. Neither is memorising a script until the words are someone else’s. The station rewards a clear account you can still tell when the question is phrased differently. Practise that change. Ask the same story a second way and see which sentence collapses.
What not to trust
- A total above 2700. That number belongs to an older UCAT that still had Abstract Reasoning as a cognitive subtest. The current ANZ total does not.
- A class percentile in place of the September cohort table.
- A home video call described as the UCAT. The test is in a centre, under the four clocks, without a pause.
- Advice that a high score makes the interview optional. Only the course page can say that, and most pages do not.
