What is the UK Youth Mobility Scheme?

The Youth Mobility Scheme, or YMS, lets people who meet nationality and other conditions live and work in the UK. If you are a Japanese citizen, check the formal YMS guidance on GOV.UK rather than relying on the general term “working holiday”. The standard stay described is up to two years.

Do not apply another nationality’s age ceiling or extension rules to a Japanese application. Read the current official conditions on eligible applicants, previous participation, family and funds when you prepare to apply.

Check when each age condition applies

For Japanese citizens, the guidance distinguishes being 30 or under when applying from being at least 18 when the visa starts. Do not confuse this with the upper age of 35 that applies to some other nationalities.

The guidance allows applications up to six months before travel. Work back from your planned date and record identity checks, documents and the period for which funds must be held, alongside the deadline. A processing estimate is not a guarantee of your travel date.

Prepare to explain your work experience in English

Choose one job or activity you actually did and organise the task, the people you worked with and what you improved. Use experiences and achievements you can explain and substantiate in an English CV.

Original example: “I helped organise weekly activities and updated the schedule when plans changed.” Add one specific example of a change and how you handled it. Aim to explain your experience in response to questions, rather than memorising a long standard answer.

Distinguish IELTS and PTE from UKVI test specifications

If you take an English test for future study or a different visa, read the full test name required by the recipient. IELTS Academic, General Training and UKVI versions, and PTE Academic and PTE Academic UKVI, cannot be freely substituted in every process.

This page links to standard Academic practice. It does not describe a compulsory test for every YMS participant. If a process specifies a UKVI version, confirm the school’s and official requirements rather than deciding that the standard test will do.

Choose the next application and English tasks

This week, check the official conditions, choose one item you need to prepare and find out how long it will take. Set a small English outcome too: answer one interview question, summarise a short notice or write a confirmation email.

Before starting test preparation, write down your purpose, recipient, exact test version and deadline. If your future plans are still undecided, you can begin with English for everyday life and work.

Try it yourself

You are a Japanese citizen researching YMS. An article for another nationality says “up to age 35”. Can you use that limit in your application plan?

Show the answer and explanation

No. Check the age conditions and assessment dates that apply to Japanese citizens on GOV.UK.

The YMS upper age depends on nationality. For Japanese applicants, check both being 30 or under at application and at least 18 when the visa starts.
