Where can Japanese citizens check the requirements?
Immigration New Zealand describes the Japan Working Holiday Visa as a route for Japanese citizens aged 18–30, with a stay of up to 12 months. Other conditions apply, including whether you have previously held a New Zealand working holiday visa. Read the full Japan-specific page rather than deciding from age alone.
The arrangements differ between countries. Do not apply another nationality’s quota or conditions to a Japanese passport. Recheck fees and availability on the official page when you prepare an application.
Plan your stay, study and work separately
The official guidance allows temporary work and up to six months of study or training in total. This visa does not allow a permanent job. You do not need a job offer to participate, but neither work nor accommodation is guaranteed.
Put your intended study, job-search and travel periods on a calendar. Keep the study limit separate from the stay length, and check visa conditions and school admission requirements individually.
Prepare for a period without earnings
Check the official instructions for proof of funds and insurance. For your living budget, separate accommodation, food, transport, communication and departure costs. Do not count hoped-for job earnings as funds you already have before travelling.
Original planning example: your first four weeks include four weeks of accommodation but only one week of food. Align the periods before adding the costs. This is a budgeting exercise, not a determination that you meet the official financial conditions.
Practise asking again and confirming the details
Original example: “Does the rent include electricity?” checks whether electricity is included in the rent. If it is not, follow up with “How is it calculated?” to ask how the charge is worked out.
Restate one condition after hearing the answer and ask the other person to confirm it. Combine reading with listening to an explanation, forming a question and writing a short confirmation.
Choose IELTS or PTE from your future purpose
If future study or another process requires English evidence, check the tests and score conditions accepted by that institution or recipient. Keep working holiday guidance separate from later student, employment or other application requirements.
The links below offer IELTS Academic and PTE Academic practice. Confirm the version the recipient requires, and do not treat a learning result as an official test score or a guarantee of a visa.
Try it yourself
You read that you can stay for up to 12 months. Does that mean you can study for all 12 months?
Show the answer and explanation
No. The length of the stay and the study or training limit are separate.
The Japan Working Holiday Visa guidance allows up to six months of study or training in total. Check your school plan against the current visa conditions.
