Make Anki cards in Obsidian with the Flashcards plugin, then study on iPhone
Set up AnkiConnect and the Obsidian Flashcards plugin, write basic, reversed and cloze cards in your notes, then move the deck to Ronri.
Connect Obsidian to Anki desktop
In Anki desktop, open Tools, then Add-ons, choose Get Add-ons and enter 2055492159, the code for AnkiConnect. Restart Anki. In Obsidian, open Settings, then Community plugins, browse for Flashcards, install it and enable it.
Open the plugin settings and use Test to check the connection. Recent versions start Anki for you if it is closed and work with AnkiConnect’s default settings, so most people do not need to edit any configuration.
Write cards inside a note
A basic card is one line: What is the capital of France?::Paris. Three colons make a reversed card that you study in both directions: TCP:::Transmission Control Protocol. Highlighting a phrase with double equals signs makes a cloze: The mitochondria is the ==powerhouse== of the cell.
For a longer answer, write a heading that ends with #card and put the answer underneath. A poem works well this way: a heading “Quiet Night Thought (Li Bai) #card” followed by the four lines in Chinese. Set the deck for a note with cards-deck in its frontmatter; otherwise the folder name or Default is used.
Send the cards to Anki
Run Flashcards: Update Anki from current note from the command palette, or use the Flashcards button in the sidebar. The plugin adds a small anchor and a flashcards property to the note so it can update the same Anki notes later; leave those untouched.
Older guides mention a Generate flashcards button and a #card tag on the line before the answer. The current plugin uses the update command and the syntax above, so follow the version you have installed.
Move the deck to iPhone
In Anki desktop choose File, then Export, pick Anki Deck Package (.apkg) and keep Include scheduling information and media on. Use the package rather than Notes in Plain Text: plain-text exports start with lines such as #separator:tab, which Ronri’s CSV import does not accept.
Save the package to iCloud Drive, then in Ronri open Tool, Flashcards, Import, Anki package. Check a cloze card, a reversed card and a card with an image before studying. Custom template scripts do not run in Ronri, so keep the plugin’s default note types.
Try it yourself
Write a reversed card for “HTTP” and “Hypertext Transfer Protocol” using the plugin’s syntax.
Show the answer and explanation
HTTP:::Hypertext Transfer Protocol
Three colons create cards in both directions; two colons would create only the HTTP → meaning card.
